With a goal of supporting one new family each week, FamiliesCAN helps approximately 52 families per year.
The Applications Review Committee meets once per month to process applications. Patients often work with either their social worker or the FamiliesCAN Program Director to prepare the application. We fund those families most critically in need, focusing on the amount of indebtedness created as a result of cancer treatment. We consider criteria other than income, including: number of, and age of, dependants; employment status; prognosis of the disease.
The program is designed to help adult cancer patients who are being treated in Santa Clara County. We do not fund out-of-area patients. Our goal is to help those who have lived in, and contributed to, our local community.
While most of our patients come from Stanford University Medical Center and Valley Medical Center, we have worked with patients from many other hospitals and clinics. The program helps patients who are being treated with any type of cancer.
Patients must meet the following criteria to participate:
-
Must be currently receiving cancer treatment, or must be diagnosed with cancer and scheduled to receive treatment in the next three months
-
Must be an adult at the age of 65 or under, with one or more dependants age 18 or under
(child must live in household majority of the time; parent must have legal custody of child, or show proof that he/she pays for child’s expenses)
-
Must have resided for a minimum of one year in one of the following counties: Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, Napa, Alameda, Marin, Contra Costa, Sonoma, Solano, Santa Cruz, Merced, San Benito, Stanislaus
-
Must be receiving primary treatment in Santa Clara County
-
Must be U.S. citizen
